Now that the dust has settled on the NSW state election, the inevitable post-election debate about what happened and why has started.
With nearly all the votes counted, this is an opportune time to provide some clear-eyed analysis of the data.
Despite hyperbole on the night, it’s clear that this was not a Labor landslide. Labor took a ‘land and expand’ approach, ensuring they got into government first, to build a case for majority later.
Most of the polls, including the final AFR Freshwater Strategy NSW poll, called it right.
The election result returned a Labor government that will need the support of crossbench MPs to function.
