AFR / FWS Business Poll FAQs

Invitation letter from AFR Editor-in-Chief Michael Stutchbury

Frequently Asked Questions

Who takes part in the poll?
Senior representatives from range of businesses across sectors and of various size. Businesses must have employees in Australia, and have an ABN.

I haven’t been invited – how can I take part?
To ensure that the results are high quality, and that we have representative results, only those who are invited can take part. If you want to ensure we have your firm’s relevant contact details for future business polls, you can email us at bizpoll@freshwaterstrategy.com and we will make sure your details are up to date.

Are the responses made public? / Will my responses be quoted in the AFR?
Individual responses are NOT made public or shared with the AFR. The results are analysed by the research team at Freshwater Strategy, and a final report is shared with the AFR.

Is the poll representative? / What is the AFR / FWS Business Poll representative of?
The poll is designed to be representative of the views of senior decision-makers in small (1-19 employees), medium (20-199 employees) and large (200+ employees) business entities, that operate in Australia. Because business entities skew heavily towards smaller businesses, medium and large businesses are over-sampled to ensure the results achieve an accurate picture of opinion within Australia’s largest employers.

What is the poll about? / What questions will be asked?
Questions will vary from poll-to-poll, but in general, business decision-makers will be asked a range of key indicators, the challenges their business faces, future expectations, as well as how they are responding to government policy and emerging social issues.

How will the results be used?
The results will be used to provide the AFR with greater depth of insight in its reporting and analysis. The results may also be used for various thought leadership pieces about business trends and behaviour.

Do I have to answer all the questions?
We would encourage all respondents to answer all questions as honestly as possible. However, if you feel that you are unable to answer a question, or are unwilling to do so, you can select the ‘Prefer not to say’ option. You are not obliged to answer every question. Please also note that the link provided is a ‘one-time’ link and you will not be able to change your answers after you have completed the survey.

Can I complete the survey later?
If you have already started your response, you can save your position and complete the survey at a later time. But please don’t forget to complete the survey before the closing date. The link will close on the date and time specified in your invitation letter.

Am I the right person in my organisation to take this poll?
If you are a senior decision-maker, that has sight over the full breadth of decision-making within your organisation, then yes. You should have authority to respond on behalf of your business.

For example, in order of preference, you should meet one of the following criteria:

  1. Owner
  2. Partner
  3. C-suite level position
  4. Company director
  5. Financial director, Investor relations, Government relations
  6. Are completing the questionnaire on the authority of / on behalf of one of the positions listed above.

I have questions about the poll – who can I speak to?
